About this special version
--------------------------

Renegade is a very special game on CPC. More than just a good conversion of the original game, it is usually considered as the best conversion on home systems, even compared to NES version, and one of the best beat'em up on CPC.

We paid particular attention to this GX4000 adaptation. Not about the use of Plus special features, as we think it's unnecessary in a game created for standard CPC. But we made some adjustments. We hope this gameplay adaptation for a single 2-button joypad will please you. We try to find the smoothest way to play the game without keyboard despite the constraint of a 3-button gameplay on the original CPC version. One button for punches and one button for flying kicks or all on one button using diagonals.

Graphically, the new black border adds to the dark atmosphere of the game compared to the original grey one. We also removed the first line of text with copyright, useless while playing. Blood was originally turned to blue colour to be less scary for the poor emotional kids of the 80s. But a cheat permits to turn back the blood to red. This feature is now activated by default.

In 2023, a new version of the game has been spread including the running and the flying kicks while running for the main character that lacked in the original conversion. Screen flipping has been replaced by a scrolling too. All these wonders thanks to the work of Gekoaa and TotO. But this version needs 128K RAM and destined for floppy disc. We can only hope a version taking part of the cartridge will emerge in the future for the GX4000.

About the game
--------------
Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun (roughly translated from Japanese "Hot-Blooded Tough Guy Kunio"), released as Renegade in the West, is a beat 'em up video game developed by Technōs Japan and distributed by Taito for the arcades in 1986. In the original Japanese version Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun, the game revolves around a high-school delinquent named Kunio-kun (or just Kunio) who must stand up against a series of rival gangs frequently targeting his classmate Hiroshi. In the Western version Renegade, the player controls a street brawler who must face four different gangs in order to rescue his girlfriend being held captive by a mob boss.

It was an important game that defined the beat 'em up genre, establishing the standard gameplay format adopted by later games in the genre. In contrast to earlier side-scrolling martial arts games, Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun introduces 4-directional control, punch-jump-kick play action, and enemies which can sustain multiple hits. It is considered to be one of the most influential titles of the video game industry. It was the basis for Kishimoto's next game Double Dragon (1987), which further advanced and popularized its beat'em up genre format.

The game was ported to a variety of game consoles and home computer platforms. Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun was the first game in the long-running Kunio-kun series in Japan. The game's Western localization Renegade also spawned its own spin-off series with the sequels Target: Renegade (1988) and Renegade III: The Final Chapter (1989).
